Barry DeBaun, ARTIST
I was born in 1956 in Brooklyn, New York, raised in Long Island until age ten and then moved to the Catskills where I still reside. With the beauty of the mountains surrounding me and my early exposure to the ocean, I am not surprised to find most of my inspiration comes from my love of nature. Poetic landscapes, sensitive figures, realistically rendered still life and moody seascapes, place me as a true American Romanticist. I worked in watercolor my entire career and in oils in more recent years. My work is reminiscent of the 19th century painters. I have been greatly influenced by the Hudson River School painters, the Pre-Raphaelites and the American Impressionists. As with Thomas Cole in the mid-1800s, I am continuing the legacy of traditional painting in the Catskills and beyond. I am the winner of many national awards, received from groups including the American Artists’ professional League, the Salmagundi Club, Kent Art Association, Northeast Water Color Society, Ridgewood Art Institute and the Hudson Valley Art Association where I received the Gold Medal of Honor. I am also listed in Who’s Who in America. My work may be found in private collections throughout the United States, Germany, England, Switzerland and the Dominican Republic. During my career, I have exhibited in many important galleries throughout the East coast and museums, including: The Albany Institute of History and Art, Albany, New York; The Berkshire Museum of Fine Art, Pittsfield, MA; The Springfield Museum of Fine Arts, Springfield, MA; and a special invitational show at the Senate House Rotunda in Washington, DC in 2001. I have served on the Board of Directors of the Hudson Valley Art Association, American Artist Professional League, Council of American Artist Societies, and the Hudson River Watercolor Society.
