Summer Fun

By Meredith Page Jones

After such a mild southern spring, it may be harder to get into gear for our impending and inevitable sunny heat. The surest remedy for that lack of enthusiasm is to dwell on all this year’s delightful summer fashion. Shoes and accessories are the keys to putting your best foot forward. Dress up a lake-casual look with a delightful scarf. Protect your face from sun with a stylish hat. Rock the pool with the perfect swim tote. Show off the pedicure with an amazing pair of flip flops. Let’s look at some of this season’s trends in accessories, bags, and shoes.

This summer the accessory look is beautiful, yet functional. Bright colors and patterns pop on light weight scarves and this creates a lovely focal point for your outfit, but these scarves serve a purpose. Use the scarf to tie back a ponytail, or as a makeshift headband. A larger scarf can ward of the occasional chill that rolls in with summer nights. A sparkly scarf can make a simple, cotton, lake dress appropriate for an evening out. Similarly, hats are stylishly functional.

Sun protection is important when playing on the water. Many people think that hats don’t look good on them, but the shape of the hat is the most important factor in how it looks on an individual. There’s a surprising variety of shapes available in functional sun hats this year, and a great retail associate (like the ones at Madeleine Page classy footwear, and accessories) can help you pick the shape that’s right for your face. Hats aren’t the only sun protection in fashionable form.

Finding an amazing swim cover is almost as important as finding the right suit. Lightweight materials, full coverage, and a wonderful pattern or color are the key consideration to finding a beautifully functional swim cover. The loose, flowy styles complement the lake-casual life marvelously.

The perfect summer bag is a classic discussion. However, let’s look at one particular necessity of summer activity: the swim tote. This is a larger construction than most of us are used to carrying, but being specific to lakeside and poolside fun it can be bright and quirky in a way that the everyday bag can’t. Seize the opportunity to be playful and push your comfort zone with the color and style of your swim tote. It’ll bring some extra joy to your life.

The real staple for summer in the south is the flip flop. Just like the basic black shoe, you can never have too many in your closet. There’s a style for every woman from sparkly to classic. If you want fun patterns, check out Havaianas. If you want durable leather (but also cute), try OluKai. If you want a dressier, classic style, you need Jack Rogers. For everything in between there’s a brand or style available at Madeleine Page at Lake Oconee.
