A Backyard Getaway

By State Botanical Garden of Georgia

The past year has been one of tremendous growth at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. With the opening of the Alice H. Richards Children’s Garden came a drastic increase in visitation, including record attendance for classes, tours and events. Construction also began on the new Center for Art and Nature, which will include a new garden entrance with elevator, a porcelain and decorative art museum, and new garden spaces; all scheduled to open by the end of 2020.

So, when did you last visit the garden? We often spend months planning vacations to the beach, amusement parks or other countries, forgetting that amazing experiences and memories can also be created in a day trip or weekend getaway. The garden has an eclectic offering to suit many interests, whether it is the amazing new children’s garden, over five miles of woodland nature trails, garden symposia, display gardens or the garden gift shop. It is also an Important Bird Area and perfect for photographing flowers or wildlife. All of this is available with free admission and free parking.

You don’t have to take our word for it, either. Fodor’s Travel recently listed the garden as one of “10 Ultimate Things to do in Georgia.”

And don’t forget about the city around the garden, as Athens is renowned for its music, food, and culture. So, remember to keep an eye on your own backyard when you search for your next destination.

Sometimes a wonderful discovery is just a few miles down the road.
