A Beautiful Community

By Dr. Ross Campbell

When my wife, Leigh, and I initially started searching for locations to settle after medical school, Athens kept rising to the top of the list. There were other areas that may have looked just as good on paper for starting a dermatology practice, but something about Athens stuck in our minds. We loved the culture and community present at the heart of Athens. The decision-making process was challenging as we debated the pros and cons of various cities and states. Finally, Leigh and I sat down together with a plan: we would simultaneously start writing the name of the town we each secretly wanted. As soon as I saw us both scratch out an “A” on the paper, I knew it–Athens was the town for us.

Athens is a beautiful medley of art, music, education, and culture, but many members of this community are struggling to make ends meet. Athens Clarke County (ACC) has some staggering statistics in regards to poverty. 34% of our Athens neighbors live in poverty, and 1 in 5 are unsure of when and where they will get their next meal. The need in our town is great, but in the midst of scarcity there is opportunity to serve.

It has always been our hope at Georgia Skin Cancer & Aesthetic Dermatology to not only serve our patients, but to also use our skills to impact the community in this town we love. Thankfully, we are not alone in this dream! Through friendship and a shared love of this city, Georgia Skin Cancer has had the honor of teaming up with Creature Comforts’ Get Comfortable campaign. Through this initiative, Get Comfortable partners with various other local small businesses to contribute funds to reputable and high-impact nonprofits in our community.

This past year Get Comfortable made it possible for Meals on Wheels to clear its waiting list for the first time in 31 years. In 2020, Bigger Vision homeless shelter will be able to offer its services all 365 days of the year. Our Daily Bread will be able to serve 7,500 more meals next year. Together we can contribute to real change in the lives of our neighbors.

At GSC we know it can be hard to find out where to begin when it comes to contributing to the community. We also know it can be hard to do something just for yourself, like booking a cosmetic treatment. We want to make it easy on you. In February and March of 2020, we invite you to join us as we donate 100% of the revenue from our injectables services to the Get Comfortable campaign.

We want to help you take care of you and your city too. We want you to know that it’s worth it to invest in yourself, and it’s easy to invest in your community. We hope you will consider us for your next cosmetic treatment and join us in our efforts to serve this community.
